CSDL này được phát triển theo nhu cầu nghiên cứu của cộng đồng khoa học và nhu cầu lưu trữ của các thư viện. Hệ thống CSDL này bao gồm các kỹ thuật tiên tiến nhất nhằm nâng cao kinh nghiệm cho người dùng.

Nội dung trong IOPscience được sắp xếp bởi trên 6.000 phân loại chủ đề thông qua  PACS và MSC codes về vật lý học, thiên văn học và toán học. Bạn có thể tác động liên thông các phân loại này bằng nhiều cách khác nhau để có thể tìm ra được các chủ đề liên quan đến yêu cầu. 

Các đặc điểm chính khác:
•    Trang chủ có thể được cá nhân hoá để trình bày các chủ đề gần đây nhất mà bạn quan tâm.
•    RSS feeds có thể thiết lập một tìm kiếm cụ thể, giúp bạn luôn cập nhật với nội dung.
•    Tag clouds được hợp nhất để trình bày nội dung.
•    Social bookmarking sẵn có từ các trang trích dẫn chủ đề cho các dịch vụ như connotea.org .
•    Khả năng lọc kết quả tinh xảo sẽ giúp bạn tinh lọc tìm kiếm của mình.

Thông tin cấp phép

IOPscience sẵn có cấp phép duy nhất truy cập điện tử giúp cho CSDL này có thể đến với từng nhà nghiên cứu. Các khách hàng sẽ cần ký một thoả thuận cấp phép IOP. IOPscience cấp cho bạn quyền truy cập liên tục trong toàn bộ thời gian mà bạn được cấp phép. Ngoài ra, bạn được quyền truy cập backfile của 10 năm về trước thời điểm thuê bao. Nếu bạn muốn truy cập thêm vào các tạp chí từ năm 1874-1998 thì sẽ chỉ phải trả một mức chi phí rất thấp hàng năm.
